Radical Sound Reggae

The reggae/dancehall compilation set "Serious Reggae" kicks off the brand new 'Serious Series' release programme on the new founded EMI PLUS label. The artists featured are a roll call of musical talent, most of them well known to a wide reggae audience.

But also such talented newcomers as singer Yogi, the outfit ARP and roots singer Taffari are given the opportunity the showcase their skills and talents. Especially Taffari's solid delivery - vocally as well as lyrically - attracts attention and makes this an artist to watch for in the future. Further noteworthy efforts can be credited to Buju Banton, who delivers the strong album opener "I.C.I." and reggae vet Gregory Isaacs, truly shining bright in the excellent Seize Fire", bringing home the message with his typical smooth sensitivity over the rebuild "Declaration of Rights" riddim. And also 'roots & culture' supremo Sizzla contributes an above average tune. The same goes for Determine, whose "Zion Hill" belongs the one of the best tunes he recorded so far, and Anthony B. The latter delivers a fine, spanking new tune in his typical singjay style. The "roots & culture" oriented tunes are alternated by lovers songs from such recognized, sweet-voiced " lovers" singers as Lukie D, Singing Melody and Tony Curtis.
Gathering older and fresh, new material from Syl Gordon's '321 Strong Productions', this well varied and entertaining sampler offers enough enjoyable efforts to make it worthwhile checking out.
