Jet Star’s Reggae Hits series was launched back in the eighties, when dancehall first evolved from the music of Bob Marley’s generation. Bursting with hits and widely advertised on television, it not only rubber-stamped Jet Star’s credentials as reggae’s No. 1 distributor worldwide, but also set the benchmark for every other reggae hits compilation to follow.
Two decades later and Reggae Hits remains a crucial barometer of what’s fresh and new in the dancehalls; of which artists and producers are leading the pack and where the music is headed next. The line-up on Vol. 32 is exceptional, even by previously high standards. Only the biggest name singers and deejays made the final cut, and they were chosen from the dancehall, roots and UK arenas alike, making this series the most representative in its field. Dancehall superstars don’t come any bigger than Sean Paul, who proves just why he’s now one of the three top-selling acts in America on Brethren. Like Wyclef Jean, Sean Paul’s a household name, yet both maintain a strong presence in the dancehalls as well as the pop charts, and deliver absolute killers here. Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Mr. Vegas and Jamaica’s reigning deejay, the unstoppable Elephant Man, are all international hit makers too. Their tracks on Reggae Hits Vol. 32 are among this year’s biggest hits, and appear here whilst booming out of every speaker box in reggae controlled territories world-wide. Few records capture the excitement of a new dance craze like Mr. Vegas’ ‘Chop Out De Grass’ for example, or kick up such rumpus as Beenie Man’s ‘Use U Fist’; whilst Elephant Man’s ‘Blasé’ is the work of Kingston’s hottest dancehall producer, Donovan “Vendetta” Bennett of Don Corleon, whose rhythms have ruled reggae radio and sound-systems throughout 2003.
Music this exciting should carry a health warning, and especially with the two Rasta prophets, Capleton and Sizzla, among the cast. A galaxy of top-flight singers accompanies them here headed by Beres Hammond, whose latest anthem, Live My Life, confirms his reputation as Jamaica’s best-loved vocalist. The addition of timeless hits by Sanchez, Luciano and Morgan Heritage (with the sumptuous Man In Love), together with future classics by UK acts like Lloyd Brown, Don Campbell and Peter Hunnigale ensures this album will appeal to reggae lovers of all tastes.
