In this age of uncertainty, only those with faith will be strong enough to face the tests that confront them. Maybe that’s why audiences for gospel music are growing right across the world, but it also has a lot to with exciting new developments currently taking place in this oldest and most cherished of all musical genres. But whilst it’s true that contemporary gospel can now take any number of different forms, few artists blend reggae, soul and gospel to such sumptuous effect as Osmond Collins, whose musical background is rooted in the sounds of America and the Caribbean.
Although, born in Jamaica, Osmond left for the United States at the age of fourteen. Several years later, after working for MCA as a songwriter, he was on the verge of signing an artist deal when he embraced the faith and turned his attention to singing gospel music. His debut album, Exalted One, blended elements of R&B with church music, offering a foretaste of what was to come on other, innovative gospel projects that lay ahead. In 2001, he met producer/ songwriter/ arranger Tony Rich, who promptly recognised Osmond’s potential, and then invited him to record tracks for a forth-coming Jet Star compilation. With his reputation for well-crafted, quality productions and sublime vocal arrangements, Rich made an ideal foil for the talented singer-songwriter from New Jersey. This fortuitous meeting led to Osmond’s first album of reggae/ gospel tracks, Walk The Walk, which received substantial praise in gospel circles, and especially in America.
Two years later and these two, like-minded musical souls have done it again, just as the title of their album suggests. Recording again took place at Jet Star’s studios in North London, with Tony Rich in the role of both arranger and producer (and also co-writer on certain tracks). The remaining material is all self-penned, and more importantly, conceived, performed and recorded to a high level of creativity. Here is an album that reaches into the essence of reggae, soul and gospel styles, and in delivering the best of each, confirming Osmond Collins’ undoubted star quality. His lyrics are by turn uplifting, instructional, inspirational, whilst the rhythms shine with quality as they fuse groove with the most irresistible of melodies. Take, God Is In Control for example, Do It Again Lord, the rousing Reload And Come Medley or lead single, Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem, which many gospel commentators are already calling a classic just like the entire album in fact.
